Types of immunityImmunity to a disease is achieved through the presence of antibodies to that disease in a person's system. Antibodies are proteins produced by the body to neutralize or destroy toxins or disease-bearing organisms. Antibodies are specific to the disease. For example, measles antibody will protect a person who is exposed to measles disease, but will not have effect if it is exposed to mumps. There are two types of immunity: active and passive. Active immunityActive immunity results when exposure to an organism of disease activates the immune system to produce antibodies to that disease. Exposure to the body of the disease may occur through infection with the actual disease (resulting in natural immunity), or the introduction of a dead or weakened form of the disease organism by vaccination (induced immune). Either way, if an immune person comes into contact with that disease in the future, his immune system will recognize it and immediately produce the antibodies necessary to fight it. Active immunity is durable and sometimes lasts all life. Passive immunity Passive immunity is provided when a person receives antibodies to a disease instead of producing them through their own immune system. A newborn baby acquires passive immunity from his mother through the placenta. A person can also obtain passive immunity through blood products that contain antibodies such as immune globulin, which can be given when immediate protection of a specific disease is needed. This is the main advantage of passive immunity; protection is immediate, while active immunity takes time (usually several weeks) to develop. However, passive immunity only lasts a few weeks or months. Only active immunity is durable. Journal articles on this policy of notification/disclaimer

This article reviews active and passive immunity and differences between them: it also describes the four types of vaccines available commercially (live, killed/inactive, subunit and toxoid): it also analyzes how these different vaccines generate an adaptive immune response.
